Does usage of the noun T-shirt change to tee shirt when in different parts of the world? It seems it's not quite that straightforward.
An amusing conversation took place whilst rebuilding the reflective-tshirts website... "Is it t shirt, t-shirt, tee shirt or tee-shirt?" I asked the rest of the team. As a mark of respect I will use each version interchangeably for the remainder of this post.
So, we've all been in the 't-shirt' business for well over a decade each meaning a collective 50+ years in the the 'tee shirt' printing business and we still couldn't agree on a single version.
I prefer t-shirt - I think it just looks better.
Lee's stance was that T shirt should be used.
Carl prefers either tee-shirt or tee shirt.
After a about a 30 minute conversation where we argued, deliberated and dipped in and out of Google trying to get to the bottom of the argument we did all manage to agree on one thing... it really doesn't matter which version you wish to shine your own personal light on it is - it's still reflective.
Which version do you use (or prefer)?
A Google search reveals usage of each version is pretty much evenly split across all versions.
The well respected Grammarist.com states that 'T Shirt is probably the most popular, but none would be considered wrong.' He-hem,,, our conversation got rather heated in a between colleagues type way :-)
Whilst WritingExplained.org analyses the t-shirt / tee shirt argument in a more scientific way and summarises that:
'T-shirt is the overwhelmingly predominant version' and 'Tee shirt rarely appears in print. Avoid it in your writing.'
(Not a mention of t shirt or tee-shirt however on their page.)
Further clarity here from the wikipedia community who of course are rarely wrong ;-) :
So is it t shirt, t-shirt, tee shirt or tee-shirt?
Our summary is quite simple. It doesn't matter whether it's t shirt, t-shirt, tee shirt or tee-shirt, for us, it's all the same and it's always reflective. We simply haven't got time to debate any longer!
